Rain on Your Wedding Day? Why It Might Be the Best Thing for Your Wedding Photos

Rain on Your Wedding Day Doesn’t Have to Ruin Your Plans.

Rain on your wedding day is one of the biggest worries couples have before their wedding.

“What if it rains?”

It’s completely understandable. You’ve spent months (or even years) planning your wedding, and it’s natural to imagine blue skies and sunshine.

Couples worry about rain on their wedding day.

Rain on your wedding day doesn’t ruin a wedding.

Sometimes, it makes it even better.

Rain on your wedding day creates beautiful light

One of the biggest surprises for couples is just how flattering overcast weather can be.

Clouds act like one giant softbox, giving us beautiful, even light without harsh shadows or squinting into bright sunshine.

The result?

Natural skin tones, soft colours and gorgeous portraits.

Some of my favourite wedding photos happened in the rain

Rain changes the mood in the best possible way.

Couples naturally slow down.

They cuddle a little closer.

They laugh when they get caught in a shower.

Those genuine moments often become the photos they love most.

As photographers, we’re always looking for real moments—not perfect weather.

We always have a Plan B

One of the biggest advantages of having an experienced wedding photographer is knowing we can adapt.

Before every wedding, I look at:

  • nearby undercover locations
  • verandahs
  • gardens
  • large trees
  • beautiful indoor spaces
  • reception areas
  • window light

If the weather changes, we simply adjust the plan.

Most of the time, we only need a short break in the rain to create beautiful portraits.

What if the rain stops?

One of the best parts about rainy wedding days is what often comes afterwards. Fresh air, soft light and dramatic skies can create some of the most beautiful conditions for wedding photography. Sometimes we only need to wait a few minutes before heading back outside.

Clear umbrellas are always worth having

If rain is looking likely, I always recommend picking up a couple of clear umbrellas.

They’re inexpensive, photograph beautifully, and still let plenty of light through.

Unlike coloured umbrellas, they don’t cast strange colours onto your faces.

Don’t stress about the forecast

Weather forecasts change constantly.

I’ve photographed weddings where rain was predicted all week…

…and it stayed dry.

I’ve also photographed weddings with perfect forecasts that ended in spectacular sunsets after a passing shower.

The weather is one part of the day you can’t control.

Everything else—the people, the laughter, the hugs, the happy tears—is still going to happen.

And those are the moments that matter most.

My advice?

If rain appears in the forecast…

Take a deep breath.

Trust your vendors.

Bring a couple of clear umbrellas.

And enjoy your day.

Some of the most beautiful weddings I’ve photographed weren’t the sunniest—they were the ones where everyone embraced whatever the day brought.

At the end of it all, you’ll remember how your wedding felt, not what the weather forecast said, oh and there’s always cake!
