Best Places for Family Photos Around Lake Macquarie

Best Places for Family Photos Around Lake Macquarie

Looking for family photos Lake Macquarie? You really are spoilt for choice.

But here’s the thing — you don’t necessarily need to find the prettiest location.

The best location is often the one where your family feels comfortable.

Sometimes that’s your own backyard. Sometimes it’s a beach where the kids can run barefoot, or somewhere with a little bridge to walk across and explore.

When I’m choosing a location for a family photography session, I’m thinking about your family first. How old are the kids? Do they like running around? Are grandparents coming? Do you have a dog? Would they be happier at the beach or somewhere surrounded by trees?

And most importantly — where will everyone actually relax?

Here are some of my favourite places for family photos around Lake Macquarie.

1. Your own backyard

Honestly, your own backyard is one of my favourite places for family photos.

And I know it probably doesn’t sound very exciting at first!

But think about it — this is where your kids already feel comfortable. They know the space, they know where everything is and they don’t have to spend the first 15 minutes getting used to a new place.

We can photograph them playing, running around, jumping on the trampoline, cuddling the dog, climbing, kicking a ball or simply hanging out with you.

There’s something really special about photographs taken in the place where your everyday family life actually happens.

Sometimes the most meaningful location is the one you don’t think of as a location at all.

2. Catherine Hill Bay

If your family loves the beach, Catherine Hill Bay is hard to beat.

You’ve got the beautiful wide beach, plenty of space for kids to run and explore, and the historic jetty makes a fantastic feature in photographs. The combination of sand, ocean, bushland and the old jetty gives us lots of variety without having to travel between different locations.

We can walk along the sand, play in the water, explore the rocks and let the kids be kids.

Bare feet, windswept hair and sandy toes are absolutely fine with me.

3. The Swing Bridge

The swing bridge is a great choice for families who don’t want their session to feel like a traditional photo shoot.

There’s somewhere to walk, something for the kids to look at and plenty happening around you, which means we’re able to keep moving rather than asking everyone to stand still.

And honestly, that’s often when I get the photographs I love most.

The kids can explore, you can walk together and we can stop along the way for a few photographs when the moment feels right.

4. Green Point Foreshore

Green Point Foreshore is another really versatile location for family photography around Lake Macquarie.

There’s the lake, grassy areas, bushland, walking paths and the jetty, so we can get a good mix of photographs without everything looking the same. The foreshore also has easy, flat paths, which can be useful if you’re bringing a pram or grandparents along.

It’s a great option if you want that beautiful Lake Macquarie backdrop without necessarily having a full beach session.

We can walk, explore, sit together by the lake and let the kids have a bit of freedom.

5. Wangi Wangi

Wangi Wangi is one of those places that gives us lots of options.

There’s the lake, trees, walking paths and beautiful natural surroundings, so we can move around depending on what your family is enjoying on the day.

It’s particularly nice for families who want photographs that feel relaxed and outdoorsy rather than overly posed as there is a small walk down to the lakes edge.

And if you’ve got little ones who need to keep moving, that’s absolutely fine.

In fact, I’d much rather have them running, exploring and laughing than standing perfectly still and looking at my camera.

6. Caves Beach

Caves Beach is a great option if your kids love to explore.

The beach gives us plenty of room for running around, while the rocks and caves add something a little different to the photographs.

It works particularly well for families who don’t want a session where everyone is expected to sit still and smile.

We can explore, walk along the sand, play and see what happens.

And that’s really the point of my family sessions — I’m not looking for perfect posing. I’m looking for your family being your family.

How do you choose the right location for family photos in Lake Macquarie?

This is where I come in.

Before your session, we’ll chat about your family and what you’re hoping for from your photographs.

If you’ve got little kids who need to move, I’ll suggest somewhere with plenty of space.

If grandparents are coming along, we’ll think about somewhere that’s easy for everyone to get around.

If your family loves the beach, let’s embrace that.

And if your kids are happiest running around your backyard, then your backyard might be the perfect location.

There’s no single best family photography location in Lake Macquarie.

There’s just the location that’s right for your family.

What time of day is best for family photos?

For outdoor family photography, I generally prefer later in the afternoon when the light is softer.

But I also know that real families don’t always work around the perfect photography schedule!

If you’ve got young children who are much happier earlier in the day, we’ll work with that.

The most beautiful light in the world isn’t going to help if everyone is tired, hungry and ready to go home.

What if the kids don’t cooperate?

They probably won’t.

And that’s completely okay.

Your kids don’t have to sit still, smile on command or look at my camera for an hour.

I work with kids at their pace. We’ll play, walk, explore, have a chat and give them time to get comfortable.

Sometimes the photographs where they’re running away from you are the ones you end up loving the most.

And if someone needs a little break, that’s fine too.

Family photos don’t have to be perfectly organised to be beautiful.

Can grandparents and extended family come too?

Absolutely.

My $350 family photography session includes grandparents, extended family and furry family members at no extra charge.

So if you have grandparents visiting, cousins coming along or you want the whole family together, bring everyone.

I actually think these bigger family photographs are incredibly important.

Because someone is always behind the camera.

This time, you get to be in the photograph too.

So, which Lake Macquarie location is right for your family photos?

The answer might be Catherine Hill Bay.

It might be Green Point Foreshore.

It might be The Swing Bridge or Wangi Wangi.

Or it might be your own backyard.

There really isn’t a wrong answer.

What matters most to me is that you and your family feel comfortable enough to forget about the camera for a little while.

You don’t need perfectly behaved children.

You don’t need matching outfits.

You don’t need to know how to pose.

And you definitely don’t need to spend an hour standing still and smiling at a camera.

You just need to bring yourselves. I’ll take care of the rest.
